The Parish Staff
The Reverend Gerald E. Murray, JCD, Pastor
Father Murray was born
in Brooklyn, New York in May 1959, and grew up in New Rochelle. He attended
Regis High School and Dartmouth College. He entered St. Joseph's Seminary,
Dunwoodie in 1980, and was ordained a priest on December 1, 1984. He was
assigned to various parishes in the Bronx and Manhattan before being sent
to the Gregorian University in Rome in 1993 to study Canon Law. He was
awarded a Doctorate in Canon Law in 1998, and then served briefly as a
Judge on the Metropolitan Tribunal before being named Pastor of St. Vincent
De Paul Church on West 23rd Street in 1998. In 2012 Fr. Murray was named
Pastor of Holy Family Church.
Fr. Murray has appeared as a commentator on religious topics
on various television and radio outlets, including EWTN, EWTN
Spanish, Fox News, Fox Business News, MSNBC, NY1, Radio Maria,
Radio, Fox News Radio and the Voice of America. He is fluent in
French, Spanish and Italian, and has a working knowledge of Portuguese. He
served in US Naval Reserve Chaplain Corps from 1994 to 2005.
The Reverend Joseph T. Chacko, Parochial Vicar
Father Joseph T.
Chacko, Parochial Vicar, joined the staff of Holy Family in May 2011.
He was born in India, in the state of Kerala, into a Syrian
Catholic family in 1952 and ordained to the priesthood on the Feast of St.
Joseph, March 19, 1984.
Fr. Chacko was deeply influenced by his uncle, Bishop
Jacob Vadakeveetil, a missionary in North India and the Apostolic
Administrator of Balasore, Orissa. Among his duties here at Holy
Family will be the celebration of Sunday and weekday Mass, RCIA, and the
hope of starting a new ministry to young adult Catholics. Prized moments
during his period of formation are his days of working with Mother Teresa
and her Sisters in Calcutta—an experience that has enriched his priesthood.
Fr. Chacko has been in
the United States since July 2006, serving in the Diocese of Norwich in
Connecticut. He has served as Parochial Vicar of St. Matthew Parish in
Tolland and as Administrator of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Preston.
The Reverend Gérard Messier, AA, In Residence
Father Messier was born
on 14 April, 1932. He was ordained on 22 March 1958 in Montlhéry, France.
He is an Augustinian of the Assumption, an order which was founded by Fr.
Emmanuel d’Alzon, and whose mission is primarily education. He instilled in
his followers what he called “Les Trois Amours” (the Three Loves) - Love of
Jesus, Love of Mary and Love of the Church.
Fr. Messier was teacher of French from 1960 at Assumption
Prep School, Assumption College and Graduate School in Worcester, MA.
In 1990 he was appointed as a chaplain of the Allen Pavilion
in Inwood and then a chaplain at the Village Nursing Home. He was a
resident of St.Vincent De Paul Church. Fr. Murray, the Pastor there,
invited him to follow him in his new parish, Holy Family Church, where he
has been since January, 2013.
Sister Mirjam Hugens, FSO, Pastoral Assistant
Sr. Mirjam (pronounced
Miriam) is originally from the Netherlands. She is a member of The Spiritual
Family The Work, also referred to as The Work of Christ,
(Familia Spiritualis Opus - FSO), a Family of Consecrated Life of
Pontifical Right, which was founded by Mother Julia Verhaeghe in 1938.
Sr. Mirjam was sent to
New York in 2004 to work for the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See
to the United Nations, and recently joined the staff at Holy Family Church.
She has a broad experience in religious education and religious program
Sr. Mirjam’s foreign
language abilities (Dutch, German and French) help the parish to meet the
needs of the international congregation that comes to the Church of the
